Learning Environment Instructor Tools Overview
This training program will provide essential knowledge required for instructors, facilitators, and course designers to get started with course development and delivery using Brightspace Learning Environment (LE).
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Each participant will understand how to create, edit and manage a variety of instructor tools for specific purposes as well as develop exemplars for future use in Brightspace Learning Environment. At the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Define key Brightspace terminology.
- Create and manage course materials, assessment activities, and course communications.
- Evaluate and grade assignments, quizzes, and discussions.
- Apply effective online and blended learning practices within the context of Brightspace Learning Environment.

Up to twelve Per Trainer.
AUDIENCE
This training program is for you if you use Brightspace LE to develop courses, teach/facilitate using Brightspace, or support instructors who use Brightspace. Instructors, Course Facilitators, Course Developers, and Support Staff are encouraged to attend to gain a better understanding of how different users will be using Brightspace.
DELIVERY METHOD
Live Virtual Classroom or Live in Person (two full day minimum required)
LOCATION AND TRAVEL EXPENSES
Private training sessions can be conducted via a Live Virtual Classroom, in person at D2L headquarters or at your location. Travel expenses for in person sessions are not included in the course cost. For a session to be delivered onsite the booking must be for at least two consecutive days.

Our lead time is typically 3 to 4 weeks from the date of request but can be higher during peak times which are typically June, July and August.
While we will make every effort to accommodate your preferred dates, scheduling of sessions will be dependent on the availability of a suitable delivery resource.
Learning Environment Instructor Tools Agenda
SESSION 1: CAN WE BUILT IT? CREATING & CURATING CONTENT (2 HOURS)
We will begin by learning how to navigate Brightspace Learning Environment, as well as become familiar with key terminology and available resources. We will then move into building out the content area of a course, which will be a one-stop-shop for our students to easily navigate. We will explore multiple methods for creating and/or bringing in content to share with students, and we will add placeholders for the assessment activities that we will create in the next session.

- Getting the most out of Brightspace Learning Resources
- Copying and creating content:
- Copying over your existing Brightspace content and components
- Building new content from scratch
- Bringing in your own content
- Creating placeholders for Assignments, Quizzes, and Discussions to help plan course activities and assessments
SESSION 2: ASSESSING & EVALUATING (2 HOURS)
This session will work through the many ways an instructor can evaluate using the assessment tools in Brightspace. Effective practices will be shared as we build a variety of course activities and assessments. By the end of the session, you will have built an assignment and a quiz that reflect your course’s goals. We will also look at supporting course evaluation requirements and ensuring student success
- Creating and evaluating assignment submissions or building a basic quiz
- Exploring evaluation methods in the Grades tool
SESSION 3: COMMUNICATING & ENGAGING (2 HOURS)
We will learn how to use Brightspace to communicate with students, support their learning, and apply strategies to motivate them to engage with the course. You can leverage Announcements and the Activity Feed widget to share course updates and resources with your students, without having to leave the homepage! Finally, we will discuss building student autonomy and active learning as we explore additional tools in Brightspace.
